SHC programs engage churches and small business owners/entrepreneurs such as, barbers and hair stylists in these activities.

Health Champions

The Health Champions program is an expansion of our HAIR Wellness Warriors program and recruits barbers, hair stylists, small business owners, entrepreneurs (such as yoga instructors and personal trainers), and leaders of community-based organizations, equipping them with technical assistance on how to effectively communicate health topics, while building capacity for their business.

Health Champions have come together from across the nation to protect communities from ravages of the flu and COVID-19, as well as improve health outcomes for cancer screenings, lupus, clinical research and diabetes by providing education and outreach through direct education to clients and community events. These small business owners and entrepreneurs provide an approach that focuses at the hyperlocal level to understand people’s beliefs and concerns, encourage conversation, and spark health promotion at the community level.

Who are Health Champions?

Health Champions are trusted community members who tap into their special relationships with clients and the community to educate and engage underserved populations on health equity and connect them to healthcare resources, social services, and research opportunities. These Champions serve as bidirectional conduits of change, disseminating the latest medical knowledge while amplifying community voices to inform healthcare leaders about pressing local concerns.
